Both teams have already achieved a top three finish this season

What | 2022 Benbow Collegiate

When | Monday (March 7) through Tuesday (March 8)

Where | Jacksonville Beach Golf Club (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.)

Western Illinois will have both men's and women's golf competing in the 2022 Benbow Collegiate Tournament, hosted by Butler University from Monday (March 7) through Tuesday (March 8). The Leathernecks will compete at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., a par-71 course. The men will compete at 6750 yards, and the women will compete at 6021 yards.

Words From Coach Lia | "The Women are back in action after a week off. The key in Jacksonville will be our short game on the Bermuda Greens. If we navigate those we will be in good shape. Weather looks good, so we are looking forward to competing," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "The Men have historically played well at Jacksonville Beach. We won the event the last time we were there. If we are accurate off the tee and strong mentally, we have a chance to defend the title."

Spier Leads The Way In Diamondhead | Graduate Student Wyatt Spier led Western Illinois in the 2022 Gulf Coast Collegiate, thanks to a tremendous second-round score. He finished with a -4 (68) second-round score that included four birdies. The 68 round score is one stroke above his best round, which he set in the third round of the Alabama State Spring Kickoff back in 2020. Spier placed t-23rd overall with a score of +10 over par (226).

Hooper Finishes Top Three | Natalie Hooper will look to continue her great placements after placing t-3rd in the 2022 ASU Spring Classic. Hooper led WIU with a score of +18 over par (162) to help secure a second-place finish in the invitational. All five Leathernecks finished the event in the top-10.

Men's Opponents | The men will compete in a small field but still see great competition. Along with host Butler, WIU competes against in-state foe Eastern Illinois, Evansville, former Summit League opponent Purdue Fort Wayne, and Savannah State.

Women's Opponents | The women's field is much larger, with 14 total teams. The women will battle it out with Butler, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Evansville, Indiana State, IUPUI, Monmouth, Purdue Fort Wayne, Radford, Savannah State, Troy, Valparaiso, and Western Michigan.

The women saw Savannah State in the ASU Spring Classic and Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge earlier this season.

Start Times | Teams will play 18 holes both Monday and Tuesday with shotgun times beginning at 8 a.m. CT
