Baseball's Early Lead Not Enough Versus Minnesota

The Leathernecks led 2-0 after three but couldn't score any runs the remainder of the game.

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.- Western Illinois baseball (2-18) wasn't able to maintain momentum against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-15) in game two of the three-game series. Western Illinois led by two runs a third of the way through, but a pair of big innings by the Golden Gophers helped them take Saturday's contest.

Sam Maddox gave the Leathernecks their first hit of the afternoon with an infield single and later got into scoring position on a throwing error. Toby Allred took advantage of the opportunity by scoring Maddox on a single to center to put WIU up 1-0 in the second.

Another error by Minnesota in the third inning helped Derek Botaletto reach safely, and he got over to second with a stolen base. Kory Olsen sent a 3-2 pitch down the right-field line for a double, easily scoring Botaletto to give the Leathernecks a 2-0 lead.

Jace Warkentien struck out the side in the bottom of the third and got through the Golden Gopher's lineup quickly the first time around. However, the second time around would be in Minnesota's favor.

A pair of singles put runners on the corners with no outs in the fourth, and Minnesota scored its first run with a sacrifice fly to get back within one. Another single three batters later drove in another Minnesota run to tie the game at 2-2. Warkentien got the second out with a groundout and was ahead 1-2 on his next batter but lost him with three straight balls, surrendering a walk. Minnesota's next batter doubled down the right-field line to score a pair, giving the Golden Gophers a 4-2 lead.

Minnesota led the bottom of the fifth off with a walk and followed up with back-to-back doubles to score their fifth run of the ball game. Minnesota lined the next pitch to left field to bring in two more runs and go up 7-2.

Western Illinois' leadoff batter reached safely in the final five innings, and they had a runner in scoring position in four of the final five innings but couldn't string enough hits together to mount a comeback.

Kory Olsen finished 1-4 with his RBI double, and Toby Allred went 1-3 with an RBI single. Matt Santarelli went 1-4 and ended with two stolen bases. Santarelli is now a perfect 8-8 in stolen base attempts this season.

Jack Carberry made his second appearance out of the bullpen this season and shut down the Golden Gophers in relief. Carberry pitched three innings, allowed no runs, just one hit, three walks, and struck out two.

The series concludes tomorrow (March 27) at noon.
