Baseball Drops Conference Opener To Northern Colorado

A six-run fourth inning helped the Bears take game one.

GREELEY, COLO.- Western Illinois baseball (2-14,0-1) fell in its' first Summit League matchup to the Northern Colorado Bears (4-14,1-0) 12-7. Northern Colorado used a big six-run fourth inning to gain an early edge and held WIU scoreless in the final three innings to take game one.
 
Kory Olsen led the game off with a triple and scored on a Dillon Sears sacrifice fly to give Western Illinois a 1-0 lead. Northern Colorado started the bottom of the first with a double and tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single.
 
Western Illinois loaded the bases in the third with a walk and two hit by pitches, and Jack Sievers made the Bears pay with a double to center to put WIU ahead 3-1. Northern Colorado drew a pair of one-out walks in the bottom of the third and used a single to left to score their second run of the contest.
 
The Bears started the bottom of the fourth with a walk and double and took their first lead with a three-run home run to go up 5-3. Western Illinois opted to change pitchers, but the Bears took WIU deep again for a solo home run in their next at-bat to take a 6-3 lead. After a two-out walk, Northern Colorado lined a triple to right-center to go ahead by four. They scored their sixth run of the inning with a single to left for their eighth run of the game.
 
The Leathernecks got a leadoff walk from Olsen, and he quickly got to third on a double from Sears. Western Illinois scored two runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies from Gage Cruz and Toby Allred to get back within three. The Bears got a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to take a 9-5 lead.
 
A one-out double from Adam Juran put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, and the Leathernecks looked for Nick Mitchell to drive in runs as a pinch hitter. Mitchell delivered with a sacrifice fly to center for his ninth RBI of the season. Olsen followed that up with a single to left to score another run to make it a two-run ball game.
 
Northern Colorado answered in their half of the sixth with a solo home run and RBI single to go back up by four. An RBI double by the Bears in the seventh game them a 12-7 lead.
 
Extra base hits were significant for both teams in game one. Western Illinois ended with three doubles and a triple for their second of the season. However, Northern Colorado had an even bigger game with three doubles, a triple, and three home runs.
 
Kory Olsen continued his hot hitting with a 2-3 hitting performance with a triple, RBI, and a season-high three runs scored. Olsen has a hit in six straight games, an RBI in four straight games, and a run scored six straight games.
 
Derek Botaletto had the other multi-hit game for Western Illinois, going 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.
 
Game two of the series begins tomorrow (March 19) at 1 p.m. CT.
