Late rally leads Butler past Western Illinois

Leathernecks fall to Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Western Illinois and Butler went back and forth on Monday night but a three-run eighth by the Bulldogs gave Butler a 6-3 win over the Leathernecks.
WIU jumped ahead as Nick Mitchell was able to get the offense going early.
In the top of the first with Matt Santarelli on third, Mitchell was able to drive him home with an RBI groundout for the first run of the game.
In the third, Mitchell once again knocked home a run as his sacrifice fly to center scored Kory Olsen, making it a 2-0 WIU advantage.
Butler would tie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth but in the seventh, Western regained the lead.
Olsen would successfully get a bunt down, knocking home David Olejnik.
Butler would answer back, tying the game in the seventh, then taking control in the eighth.
Brian Raymond had a strong start for Western Illinois, going five innings of one-run ball.
Raymond had one strikeout and allowed five hits.
Olsen and Olejnik each finished with two hits for the Leathernecks.
The Leathernecks continue their road trip on Wednesday, heading to Edwardsville to take on SIU-Edwardsville at 4 p.m.
