Big Innings Cost Leathernecks In Game Two

Little Rock scored all eight runs with two outs to take Saturday’s contest 8-3.

LITTLE ROCK, ARK.- Western Illinois baseball dropped game two of their series to the Little Rock Trojans 8-3 on Saturday (Feb. 26). A pair of big innings gave Little Rock seven of their eight runs to take game two.
 
Western Illinois struck early on thanks to a mistake by the Trojans. Nick Mitchell led the game off with a single and advanced to third on a fielding error by Little Rock. Toby Allred brought in Mitchell with a groundout to shortstop to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead.
 
Little Rock tied things up with a two-out RBI double in the second and then took the lead thanks to a four-run third inning. WIU got the second out of the third with a throw-out at home, but the Trojan's big rally began with an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. After a pitching change by Western Illinois, the Trojans drew a walk to load the bases. They followed it up with a double to clear the bases and take a 5-1 lead.
 
Western Illinois got back within three in the fourth inning after another error by Little Rock allowed Chase VanDerGinst to score to make it a three-run deficit. Western Illinois got a pair of singles from Jack Sievers and Kory Olsen to put runners on first and second in the sixth, which set up Allred for his second RBI of the game with a single to left.
 
Western Illinois looked to be in good shape in the bottom of the seventh with two men out and just a runner on first, but a pitching change shifted the inning. Little Rock loaded the bases with a single and a walk, and a wild pitch allowed a run to score to make it 6-3 Trojans. The next hitter for Little Rock reached on an error to bring in the second run of the inning. A wild pitch later in the inning brought another runner home for Little Rock for an 8-3 lead. Jack Bell managed to get the Leathernecks out of the jam by getting a flyout to right.
 
Cleanup hitter Toby Allred had the top day at the plate for Western Illinois, going 1-4 with a pair of RBIs to bring his RBI total up to five. Jack Sievers had a nice day in the nine spot for the Leathernecks, going 2-3 with a run scored.
 
The Leathernecks will conclude the series with Little Rock tomorrow, Sunday (Feb. 27), at 1 p.m. CT.
