Late Rally Not Enough Against Little Rock

Western Illinois’ comeback efforts came up short in the series opener versus the Trojans.

LITTLE ROCK, ARK.- Western Illinois baseball dropped their opening game of the series to the Little Rock Trojans, suffering a 6-2 defeat. Western Illinois made things interesting with a two-run eighth, but the Trojans put the game away with three runs of their own in the inning.

The first half of the game was quiet, with just four combined hits through the first four and a half innings. Little Rock finally opened up the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to jump ahead 2-0. A pair of walks to begin the bottom of the sixth set up a fielder's choice RBI to give the Trojans 3-0 lead.

Toby Allred gave WIU a spark with a double down the left-field line on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the top of the eighth. In the Leathernecks' next at-bat, Dillon Sears reached on a throwing error to allow Allred to score and put Western Illinois on the board. Nick Mitchell brought Sears home on a double to right for his fourth RBI of the season to make it a 3-2 ball game. Kory Olsen was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out, but Little Rock got out of the jam on a double play.

Little Rock responded in their half of the eighth by loading the bases to set up a sacrifice fly to put themselves back ahead by two runs. They followed that up with a two-run double in their next at-bat to take a 6-2 lead.

Jack Carberry suffered the loss for Western Illinois and dropped to 0-2 on the season. Carberry gave Western Illinois a solid five innings of work, with his only mistake being the two-run home run. He allowed just four hits and struck out two.

Jack Bell gave the Leathernecks a great inning and a third out of the bullpen, striking out three of the seven batters he faced.

Nick Mitchell had another big game in the leadoff spot, going 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Kory Olsen also added a double in his 2-3 day at the plate.

Western Illinois will be back in action for game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
