Leatherneck Defense Comes Up Big in Victory

Zareia Chevre, Alissa Dins and Anna Deets all scored in double-figures, team returns to action on Nov. 30 at Western Hall.

CHICAGO, Ill. – Western Illinois women's basketball played Monday night (Nov. 21), defeating the Chicago State Cougars 59-45 at Jones Convocation Center in Chicago, Ill. The victory is Western's first of the 2022-23 season, and it's the fewest points allowed since giving up 43 against Missouri Baptist on Nov. 23, 2021.

"It's nice to get in the win column and play a good defensive game," head coach JD Gravina said. "We made some offensive changes that may take a while to get comfortable with, but I'm encouraged that we moved the ball better and got a lot of good shots."

Elizabeth Lutz and Jada Thorpe started together for the 34th time in their respective careers as Chicago State controlled things early, taking a quick 13-7 advantage going into the first media timeout. WIU responded in a big way, however, finishing the first quarter on an 11-0 run to hold an 18-13 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

The Leatherneck run continued to start the second quarter, as Chicago State ended a 16-0 WIU run with a score mid-way through the period after the WIU defense didn't allow a bucket for nearly 10 minutes of game action. CSU would score just five points in the second quarter and commit 16 total turnovers in the first half, as Western took a 33-18 lead into the halftime break.

Like the first half, Chicago State came out firing early in the second and cut into the Leatherneck lead, going on a 15-2 run as the third quarter ended at 37-32 in favor of the 'Necks. Led by Anna Deets' 11 fourth-quarter points the WIU offense roared back to life in the fourth quarter, outscoring Chicago State 22-13 in the final 10 minutes to take home a 59-45 victory.

Zareia Chevre scored 12 and finished with four steals in 31 minutes of action, all of which were career-best marks. Anna Deets scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, while Alissa Dins tied her career-high with 11 points and two blocks. Addi Brownfield scored six and grabbed two rebounds in 16 minutes of action, while Mallory McDermott scored five on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from deep). Elizabeth Lutz finished with five points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Jada Thorpe scored three points and grabbed three rebounds.

As a team, Western shot 22-55 (40%) from the field, hitting six shots from deep and nine from the free throw line. The WIU defense had a big outing in holding Chicago State to 17-61 (28%) from the field and 4-17 (24%) from deep while forcing 27 Cougar turnovers. Western's bench continued its strong scoring numbers with 23 and the Leathernecks controlled the paint with a 26-14 advantage.

Western Illinois women's basketball is back in action next Wednesday (Nov. 30), hosting Tarleton State at Western Hall. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be followed by a men's basketball game against Southern Indiana.
