Leathernecks Conclude Cross Country Season

The Leathernecks concluded the 2022 cross country season at the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Championships this past Friday with historic results. Sophomore, Logan Lommel broke his second school record of the season, this time across the 10K distance. Lommel finished in a time of 31:20.3, taking down Dan Albert's record of 31:25 set in 1976. Lommel was followed by junior Olin Ortiz, who ran two minutes and 20 seconds faster than his previous best 10k.

"It was one of my goals in the summer to break both the 8K and 10K records," Lommel said. " I am also proud of how the entire team ran personal bests this season. Everything is pointing towards an exciting track season!"

Senior, Paulina Wuestefeld led the women's team finishing the 6K in a time of 21:57.2, her third fastest ever. Wuestefeld was followed by freshman Aylana Cezar

"This season was really rewarding. It was so much fun training hard with my teammates every day," Wuestefeld said. " I am proud to have improved as much as I did. It was nice to finish strong for the Leathernecks."

With a historic season of breaking into the record books on both the men's and women's side, the Leathernecks look to continue building on the foundation set in 2022.

"This season has created a lot of momentum for our distance team. Any time a student-athlete breaks a school record or runs a personal best, we see their confidence shift," coach Trey Brokaw said. "The plan is to continue building with a goal of finishing top-15 in the Region next year. For now we will take our positives and head into the track season with a lot of excitement."
