Western Illinois Falls to Green Bay

Muazu Sagir scored his second of the season, team looks towards a Saturday contest with EIU.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois men's soccer played on Tuesday (Oct. 4), falling 2-1 to the Green Bay Phoenix at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Muazu Sagir scored his second goal of the 2022 campaign in 45 minutes off the bench as the Leathernecks turn their attention to a Saturday matchup with Eastern Illinois.

The first half was a balanced affair, with Green Bay holding a slight advantage in total shots at 5-4 as Western had two attempts blocked and one saved. Oscar Olingdahl had his attempt at goal saved in the 31st minute while Alex Flowers made three saves. Both teams entered the break scoreless.

As the second half got rolling, so did the teams' offenses, with Green Bay opening things up with a 54th minute goal. 15 minutes later, Western found the equalizer it was pushing for off the feet of Sagir. Damian Rincon found himself on the ball near the edge of the final third and chipped his pass over the Green Bay defense for Sagir, who powered it past the opposing goalkeeper to level the game up. Sagir's 69th-minute goal was his second of this season and ties him for the team-lead.

Green Bay found a look and finished in the 77th minute, taking a 2-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle.

Kyle Owen and Xavier Brown both finished with a team-high three shots as the Leathernecks made 17 attempts to score in the game with two shots on goal. Western took seven corner kicks to Green Bay's one while drawing 15 fouls and committing just seven, as Jaylen Drummond and Paul Nerb made their first starts of the season; Tuesday also marked the first start in the collegiate career of Gabe Chapa.

Western is back in action this weekend, heading across the state to face Eastern Illinois. Kick-off in Charleston is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 8).
