Leathernecks Complete Road Draw at USI

Kyle Owen scored his fourth goal in five games as Western earned its seventh draw of the season.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Western Illinois men's soccer was in action on Wednesday (Oct. 26), facing the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in a game that finished as a 1-1 draw. The result was Western's seventh draw of the season and extends the unbeaten streak to five games, while Kyle Owen took sole possession of the team-lead with his fourth goal of the season.

Sofian Maghouz made his return to the lineup, starting alongside the likes of Jack Immesoete and Abdul Hypolite as the Englishman wasted no time making an impact, placing a left-footed shot just wide less than one minute into the game and forcing a save 12 minutes later. The Leatherneck attack pressed high early and was almost rewarded in the 21st, as Kyle Owen deflected a long-ball from the USI goalkeeper that the Leathernecks were unable to convert it into a goal. Despite more scoring opportunities like Muazu Sagir's 41st-minute shot that forced a Southern Indiana save, neither team would score the rest of the half and both teams entered the break level at zero.

Despite going down to 10 men in the 51st minute after a denial-of-a-goal-scoring-opportunity red card, it was the Leathernecks who struck first in the 55th minute. After receiving a ball that found its way from Damian Rincon to Sofian Maghouz, Kyle Owen unleashed another rocket of a shot from outside the box that careened off the left woodwork and rolled into the back of the net, giving Western a 1-0 advantage nearly two-thirds of the way through the game.

Alex Flowers came up with a big save just five minutes later, as Southern Indiana played an in-swinging corner kick that found its target. The Screaming Eagle header was played right at Flowers, who parried it away with two hands to maintain the one-goal lead. USI found its equalizer in the 62nd minute, forcing the WIU lineup to balance the challenge of playing down a man while also trying to find a lead. Despite opportunities from both sides, neither team would score and it went final as a 1-1 draw.

Western Illinois out-shot the competition 14-13, putting seven shots on target and taking two corner kicks. The Leathernecks drew 19 Screaming Eagle fouls, and the defense baited the opposing attack into seven offside calls. Maghouz led all players in the game with four shots, while Jaylen Drummond (three) and Xavier Brown (two) also recorded multiple shots. Brown, along with Owen, Immesoete, Oscar Olingdahl and Alex Flowers played the full 90 minutes, as Flowers finished with four saves.

The Leathernecks are back in action this coming Saturday (Oct. 29), hosting Oral Roberts in the final home matchup of the season. Kickoff at John MacKenzie Alumni Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the three outgoing seniors will be recognized.
