Leathernecks Fall on Senior Day

ORU leaves Macomb victorious.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinios men's soccer played Saturday (Oct. 29), falling 8-0 to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The result moves Western to 2-7-7 on the season as the team prepares to head West and face Denver next Saturday (Nov. 5) in the regular season finale.

ORU opened the scoring with penalty kick goals in the 23rd and 25th minutes, adding two more before the break and entering halftime up 4-0. The Leathernecks created a fantastic scoring opportunity early in the second half, with Kyle Owen getting behind the opposing back line for a one-on-one opportunity, but his shot was saved by a sliding Golden Eagle goalkeeper to keep WIU off the board. ORU would add four more in the second half and the game went final in their favor.

17 different Leathernecks featured in the game as WIU finished with seven shots (one on target), while taking four corner kicks and drawing 14 fouls. Alex Flowers made three saves in net while Benedikt Zechmeister made his first appearance in a game since Oct. 4 versus Green Bay and Adam Miller subbed on for his fifth appearance of the season.

Saturday's game marked the final home match of the 2022 season for Western Illinois, and the team recognized its three outgoing seniors in a ceremony after the final whistle.

Ending today with 58 appearances and 46 starts across his WIU career, Xavier Brown has played 1,289 minutes this season, which ranks second among field players and marks the first time in his WIU career that he finishes a season with over 1,000 minutes of action.
