WIU men announce 2022-23 basketball schedule

Leathernecks open regular season at Illinois State

MACOMB -- High-profile, in-state matchups as well as strong competition in and away from Western Hall highlight the Western Illinois 2022-23 men's basketball schedule.
 
Coming off an appearance in the College Basketball Classic last season, the Leathernecks face a challenging schedule this season, featuring high-major, mid-major and several regional foes.
 
Western Illinois opens the season at Western Hall, facing Monmouth College in an exhibition game Nov. 1.
 
The Leathernecks then hit the road for the season-opener, heading to Normal to take on Illinois State on November 7. The meeting against the Redbirds is the first time the two programs have met since December 31, 2000, an 87-83 overtime victory for Illinois State. The Redbirds lead the all-time series 63-41 in the matchup of regional rivals.
 
The Leathernecks are home for the first time in the regular season two days later, hosting Rockford University on Nov. 9
 
Western Illinois follows that home game with three-straight road contests. The Leathernecks begin the road swing at DePaul on November 11, then play at Central Florida on November 14 and Texas-Rio Grande Valley November 21.
 
After the road trip, the Leathernecks then settle into a four-game home stand, hosting Youngstown State November 26, Southern Indiana November 30, Texas-Rio Grande Valley December 3 and Iowa Wesleyan December 7.
 
Western Illinois faces another in-state rival, taking on Eastern Illinois Decemebr 10 in the Battle for The Old Railsplitter Axe, a traveling trophy that goes to the winner. 

The Leathernecks then begin Summit League play, hosting North Dakota State (Dec. 19) and North Dakota (Dec. 21.) before the holiday break.
