Fourth Quarter Settles Women's Hoops Action

Kansas City outscored the Leathernecks, 32-18, to secure a come-from-behind win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 12-0 run to open the fourth quarter was enough to give the Kansas City women's basketball team a 74-66 come-from-behind win over Western Illinois (12-8 overall, 3-6 in Summit League) on Monday.

The Leathernecks led 48-42 after a pair of threes from Elizabeth Lutz and Anna Deets closed the third quarter, but Western Illinois could not keep the momentum going. Kansas City went on its big run to open the final 10 minutes, notching the first 12 points, and outscored WIU 32-18 in the final period to claim the Summit League victory.

Danni Nichols led Western, scoring a team-high 18 points. Lutz added 16, Deets finished with 14, and Evan Zars added 11 with eight rebounds. Nichols also had seven boards for the WIU cause.

The game was tight throughout as the Leathernecks led 15-13 after one, and the teams each scored 17 points in the second quarter to give WIU a 32-30 lead at the break. Western held the Roos to 5-16 shooting from the field in the third, but in the decisive fourth, Kansas City hit 10-13 shots, including 5-8 from beyond the three-point arc.

After a long road trip, the Leathernecks return home on Thursday to host Oral Roberts at 6 p.m.
