Western Women Fall to Oral Roberts

Elizabeth Lutz’s strong run of form continued; Leathernecks will face Kansas City on Saturday.

MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's basketball team played on Thursday (Feb. 3), falling 55-71 to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at Western Hall in Macomb, Ill. With the result, Western moves to 12-9 on the season and 3-7 against Summit League opposition.
 
Western Illinois opened the game on an 8-2 run, with Samantha Pryor nailing two shots from deep in the game's first three minutes of action. Three minutes later the Leathernecks went on a 10-0 run that was fueled by quality shooting (4-4) in the 90 second stretch, building a ten-point lead at 22-12 with 1:52 remaining in the first period. ORU would cut into the lead, but Western held a 24-18 advantage at the end of one.
 
The hot shooting cooled off in the second period, with the Leathernecks making five of 13 attempts in the second as ORU outscored Western 21-10 and took a 39-34 lead into halftime. Western Illinois would continue to struggle from the field in the second half, as the Golden Eagles took control of the game in the third quarter and finished as winners of a 71-55 contest.
 
Elizabeth Lutz led the Leatherneck offense with 18 points, grabbing six boards and dishing out four assists while finishing the game with two steals. Danni Nichols scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Samantha Pryor hit two shots from deep. Evan Zars led the Leathernecks with nine rebounds, while Anna Deets and Mallory McDermott combined for ten points and two made shots from deep.
 
As a team, Western Illinois shot 36.7% from the field and made six shots from deep. Six players combined to grab 35 rebounds, 11 of which were offensive while three different players recorded at least one blocked shot. WIU scored 17 points off 17 Golden Eagle turnovers, while scoring 32 points in the paint and ten on fast breaks.
 
The Leathernecks are back at Western Hall on Saturday (Feb. 5), facing the Kansas City Roos at 2 p.m.
