Leathernecks Snap Losing Skid at St. Thomas.

Danni Nichols finished with a team-leading 24 points in WIU's 12th victory.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Western Illinois women snapped their five-game losing skid in a big way, going on the road and avenging a loss to St. Thomas on Saturday. The Leathernecks had it going early and would not relent, topping the Tommies 82-67.

The Leathernecks would go 8-15 from the floor, including 3-6 from three to take a 21-16 lead after the opening period. Danni Nichols and Elizabeth Lutz would set the tone, getting to the basket and knocking down three-pointers as the St. Thomas defense could not find an answer.

WIU would continue its strong offensive performance in the second quarter, hitting 7-13 to extend the lead to 45-36 at the break.

In the second half, the Leathernecks would crank up the defense while continuing to stay hot from the field offensively. After UST hit 13-23 from the field in the first half, Western Illinois would hold the Tommies to 11-28 from the field after the break. Western would keep its offense rolling, hitting 15-28 from the field after the half. It was a near-flawless performance for the Leathernecks, who led for all but one minute, 51 seconds and only trailed for :36.

Nichols would lead the scoring, finishing with 24 points. She also added six rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block. WIU had a balanced attack as Lutz scored 13 points. Jada Thorpe tallied 14, Mallory McDermott came off the bench to add 10 and Evan Zars chipped in eight. Lutz led the way on the boards, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds while also handing out three assists and forcing four steals.

The Leathernecks improve to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in the Summit League. Western Illinois continues its road trip on Monday, taking on Kansas City in a make-up game from a postponement earlier this season. The contest tips at 6 p.m.
