Leathernecks Suffer Road Defeat at SDSU

The defeat dropped Western Illinois to 11-7 overall, 2-5 in the Summit League.

BROOKINGS, S.D.  — The Western Illinois women's basketball team went on the road and suffered its fifth-straight loss, falling to South Dakota State in Brookings, 114-50, on Saturday (Jan. 22). The defeat dropped Western Illinois to 11-7 overall, 2-5 in the Summit League.

South Dakota State came out on fire, going 10-19 from the floor in the first period while holding Western to 4-16 from the field. The advantage saw SDSU take a 28-11 lead and from there, the Jackrabbits kept rolling.

South Dakota State was even better from the field in the second quarter, scoring 34 second-quarter points on 15-20 shooting. Turnovers and cold shooting also hurt the Leathernecks in the opening half as Western had 14 giveaways and went 8-27 (29.6 percent) from the field.

The Jacks did not let up, outscoring Western 52-28 in the second half.

Elizabeth Lutz led the Leatherneck offense, scoring a team-high 12 points before fouling out in the final quarter. Lutz also tied for a team-high in rebounds, pulling down three. Evan Zars added eight points for the Leathernecks, while Danni Nichols chipped in with seven. Samantha Pryor had a team-high three assists for the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois remains on the road, traveling to the Twin Cities to take on St. Thomas next Saturday at 1 p.m. WIU is looking for revenge, trying to defeat a UST squad that won in Western Hall on Jan. 1, 66-64 in double overtime, a loss that started the Leatherneck skid.
