Leathernecks Conclude Regular Season

WIU wrapped up the 2020 season in a 3-0 loss to South Dakota State on Sunday (April 11) afternoon.

MACOMB, Ill. - In a season like none other, the Western Illinois women's soccer team battled all year long. The Leathernecks concluded the season in a 3-0 loss to undefeated South Dakota State on Sunday (April 11) afternoon.

For the second straight game, the Leathernecks outshot (10-8) the Jackrabbits led by Jenna Lundgren who had three with two on goal and Carolina Gomes with two.

WIU controlled the pace of the series finale and held SDSU in their own end for the majority of the first 15 minutes of the game. In that stretch, Zoe Clarke recorded the first shot just three minutes in. Gomes almost broke into the scoring column after Angie Knies played a ball in the box off a free-kick, but her header went high.

South Dakota State took a 1-0 lead into the half with a goal in the 23rd minute. A one-goal game a majority of the second half, the visitors added two late goals in the 82nd and 86th minutes.

The Leathernecks had good chances to tie the match in the second half. Off a corner in the 55th minute, a loose ball found Lauryn Peters's feet, but traffic in front of the net blocked her shot. Another opportunity came midway through the half (75th) from Lundgren, who fired one frame, but it was saved.

Western Illinois will now rest and prep for the 2021 season after the 2020 season was delayed to this spring.
