NDSU Secures Opening League Series

Western Illinois dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday (March 20).

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois baseball team (4-12, 0-3) was swept by North Dakota State (14-3, 3-0) 7-3 and 8-4 on Saturday (March 20) afternoon.

"Have to give NDSU credit, they came out and swung it well and kept us off-balance again," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "I thought Brian Raymond threw the ball really well today - he was very competitive making his first start. Our guys did an incredible job battling at the end against a couple of very good relievers. I will be shouldering a lot of blame from today, I made some decisions that did not put some guys in a good position to succeed, and a big part of our job as coaches is to do that.

"Good thing is that we have a lot of games left to be played and this is a great group of guys that I know will respond and bounce back."

Game 1 | North Dakota State 7, Western Illinois 3

The Summit opening series featured a back-and-forth one-run game early on. Trenton Bauer knocked in Kevin Raisbeck twice, who leadoff each frame (1st and 3rd) with a single to tie it 2-2. Bauer concluded the afternoon with three RBI.

A Bison double in the fifth gave them a two-run lead, and Alex Dorethy trimmed it back to a one-run game with a sac fly in the bottom half. However, the league's leader in hitting (.294) used another double in the next inning and chipped away the remainder of game one with a run in the eighth and ninth to hold on.

Chandler Fochs (2-2) tossed six innings and set a career-high eight strikeouts while only allowing one walk.

Game 2 | North Dakota State 8, Western Illinois 4

In game two of the twin bill, both teams took advantage of defensive mistakes to score early, with NDSU holding a 2-1 lead through the first three innings.

The Bison increased their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the fourth.

In his first career start, Brian Raymond (0-1) completed 6.2 innings and struck out six to total his team-leading 19.

After being set down in order three consecutive innings, the Leatherneck bats rallied in the seventh. Luke Schwartz smacked his second double of the afternoon and made it 4-3. He ended the doubleheader 4-7 with two RBI.

WIU tied it off an NDSU error and had the winning run on third with no outs, but a double play and groundout sent the game to extras.

The visitors responded in the eighth with a three-run home run to secure the series.

Western Illinois looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow (March 21) in the finale at 1 p.m.
