Leathernecks Drop Series Opener at SLU

Chase VanDerGinst hit his first career home run to it in the eighth.

SAINT LOUIS - For the third consecutive game, the Western Illinois baseball team (2-8) fell in walk-off fashion as Saint Louis (3-10) took game one 4-3 on Friday (March 12) afternoon.

"Brett Sears pitched very well today," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "He competed for us all day and kept them off balance. We just need to learn how to win these close ball games. I know this group, and I know they won't stop competing. I'm excited to see how we respond tomorrow."

The Leathernecks jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Luke Schwartz led the quick start as he came around to score on a single in the first, and his triple in the second brought around Kevin Raisbeck. Both ended with two hits, along with Tyler Estes.

Brett Sears (1-1) threw a career-high seven innings and struck out three SLU hitters while only walking one. In his third start of the season, the freshman retired the opposition in order three times and rolled two double plays.

The Billikens chipped away in the middle frames and took the lead 3-2 in the sixth and knocked the game-winning hit in the ninth.

Chase VanDerGinst tied (3-3) the series opener with a leadoff solo shot in the eighth for his first career home run as WIU and SLU each knocked eight hits apiece.

Game two is set tomorrow at 2 p.m., and Jace Warkentien will get the start.
