Leathernecks Fall in Season Opener at SIUE

Tennis falls 7-0 at SIUE on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team (0-1) fell to SIUE (2-0) 7-0 on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon.
 
The Cougars jumped to an early lead by earning the doubles point with back-to-back 6-1 victories at No. 2 and 3. Lucky Kancherla and Maria Rybka fell 6-3 at No. 1, giving SIUE the doubles sweep. 

The Cougars carried the momentum to sweep singles play. Aina Cortina-Pou fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Lorena Castellanos dropped 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spots, while Agatha Carbonell battled hard but dropped 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3. Rounding out singles action Kancherla (No. 4), Rybka (No. 5), and Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 6) were all edged out in two straight sets. 

Western Illinois continues in-state battles with St. Francis (Ill.) on Sunday (Feb. 14).
