Leathernecks Sweep St. Francis for First Win of the Season

Head Coach Shawn Hyden records first win at the helm at Western Illinois in 7-0 victory over the Fighting Saints.

LOCKPORT, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team (1-1) swept St. Francis (0-1) 7-0 on Sunday (Feb. 14) to earn the team's first match victory of the season and the first win for head coach Shawn Hyden at WIU.

"It was a solid team performance," said Hyden. "We started strong in doubles and built off of that in singles. It's this group's first win so it's something to grow from as the season goes on."

In doubles, Lorena Castellanos and Agatha Carbonell got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1 win at No. 3. The duos of Lucky Kancherla and Maria Rybka and Aina Cortina-Pou and Nikhita Simhambhatla secured the first point, with each pair earning a 6-3 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

The Leathernecks kept the momentum going to sweep singles play. Kancherla finished first with back-to-back 6-2 sets at No. 4. Simhambhatla followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win of her own at No. 6. Rybka (No. 5) and Castellanos (No. 1) each made quick work of their opponents, winning in straight sets. Cortina-Pou and Carbonell closed out the day for the Leathernecks with their opponents giving them a little fight. Cortina-Pou took her sets 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 2, while her fellow Spain native, Carbonell, secured the seventh point of the day with a 7-6 (7), 7-5 win at No. 3.

The victories also marked the first career wins for Castellanos, Cortina-Pou, Carbonell, and Rybka.

Western Illinois finishes their in-state slate against Illinois State next Wednesday (Feb. 24).
