Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Back-to-Back Summit Wins

For the first time this season, WIU men's hoops claimed back-to-back wins.

OMAHA - The Western Illinois men's basketball team picked up its second Summit League win in as many games in an 85-77 road decision at Omaha (Feb. 5). Will Carius (21) and Anthony Jones (20) paced the Leathernecks' offense with 21 and 20 points, respectively, while Colton Sandage rounded out the double-digit contingent with 13.

There were a few early miscues where the Leathernecks failed to protect the ball, but luckily for them, Omaha was working through a few struggles of its own. At the 15:56-mark, Western committed five turnovers while the Mavs held on to one made field goal, down 10-6.

Omaha trailed the entire night -- and was down 14 midway through the second period -- but made things interesting towards the end. A 9-0 run whittled its deficit to five, 60-55, with 9:42 left, before back-to-back buckets from Sandage and Tamell Pearson repositioned the Leathernecks'  offense.

The last time Jones met the Mavericks, he scored a career-high 13 points. He matched that at halftime Friday night and continued to apply pressure on his way to a new career-high. Western's entire bench was crucial in maintaining the lead after early foul trouble limited time on the court for its starters.

"I'm really proud of the bench. The bench played well, Braden Lamar, who's a freshman, along with Marcus [Hinton], Justin Brookens, and Anthony Jones. It was a very choppy game, and I'm just proud we were able to hold on. We've had leads before and didn't give this one up. That's a step in the right direction," said head coach Rob Jeter
