Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sweep in Omaha

The Leathernecks are in the midst of a three-game winning streak.

OMAHA - What's better than back-to-back wins? Three straight wins.

And that's exactly what the Western Illinois men's basketball team is working with after sweeping Omaha in Baxter Arena Saturday night (Feb. 6). The 75-73 victory came down to the wire and saw the Leathernecks hold on, despite Omaha's late threats.

It wasn't the most exhilarating contest at the start, but Western got the job done for a 37-32 advantage at the break. A four-minute scoring lull, where the score sat at 15-11, slowed the pace of the game, but Anthony Jones ended the funk at 10:45. His layup set off a 10-4 run, and the Leathernecks were up by 11 before settling on the halftime score.

Play certainly picked up in the second half, as the lead swung back and forth.

Western was up by one with 40 seconds left when Colton Sandage forced a UNO turnover. He scored two at the charity stripe on the ensuing possession, and the Mavs had a chance to tie things twice in the final seven seconds. Down three, 73-70, Omaha went 2-for-3 at the free-throw line (:07), and a last-second layup missed off the backboard as time expired.

"We couldn't have won this game two, three weeks ago," said head coach Rob Jeter. "It's a process for us. We're figuring out how to win. Yesterday, we were ahead the entire game. Today, we lost the lead and got it back.

"We talk about toughness, discipline, and defense. The ball won't go in sometimes, and we have to put all three together, all the way to the end. That's how you finish games."

Will Carius finished the night with his fourth Summit League game with 20-plus points (22) while Justin Brookens and Sandage each recorded 11. Cameron Burrell was a monster on the boards for a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Leathernecks have one final homestand inside Western Hall and will welcome Denver Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
