Early Second-Half Goal Lifts Denver, 2-1

An early second-half goal by Denver lifted the Pioneers to a 2-1 win on Saturday (Feb. 20).

DENVER - An early second-half goal by Denver (2-0-0) lifted the Pioneers to a 2-1 victory over Western Illinois (0-2-1) on Saturday (Feb. 20) evening.

"Much better performance today, but not quite enough good enough," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Denver's second goal was pretty nice and is put us under pressure, but I am proud of our guys effort and rebounding for the first game of the series."

The Leathernecks erased DU's goal in the 5th minute. Last year's Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, Paul Kirdorf, earned a penalty kick and converted successfully to tie it in the 41st minute.

Denver netted the game-winner out of the gates in the second half with a goal in the 51st-minute mark.  Jack Immesoete nearly tied it late, but his shot went wide left. Western also had a look to tie the league's preseason favorite with a corner in the 77th minute.

Sophomore Seanan Main stopped two big shots late in the second set of 45 to finish with three to keep it a one-goal game.

WIU enters its first of three bye weeks and then heads to Omaha on March 4 and 6.
