Western Edged in Non-League Contest

Freshman Alex Flowers made his collegiate debut in the starting XI.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - In the first non-league contest of the season, the Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-3-1, 0-2-1) dropped a 1-0 contest to SIUE (3-0-0) on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

The match was delayed over an hour due to lightning in the area.

Freshman Alex Flowers made this collegiate debut on the road in the starting XI. He recorded his first career save in the 40th minute to lead both sides into halftime scoreless. The rookie made a huge left-handed save late in the second half to keep the match tied.

WIU put pressure on the undefeated Cougars to start. Luke Duball had a shot on goal that was saved, and a few minutes later, the Leathernecks earned three consecutive corner kicks.

Midway through the second half, Western tested the SIUE goalkeeper. Three straight shots - two from Ryan DeBois and one by Daisuke Otsuka - were on frame. The host eventually found the lone goal of the match in the 77th minute.

Western Illinois resumes Summit League play at Omaha on Thursday (March 4) and Saturday (March 6).
