Omaha Holds on 1-0 in Series Opener

Michale Howell hit the crossbar in the 86th minute.

OMAHA - In game one between Omaha (2-1-0, 1-1-0) and Western Illinois (0-4-1, 0-3-1), the Mavericks held on in the second half for a 1-0 victory on Friday (March 4) evening.

"Tough on our guys not to get something from the game," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We are inching closer to a win just need to better in final third."

Omaha found the back of the net in the 48th minute for the eventual game-winner after both sides entered half scoreless.

After the Mavs goal, the Leathernecks controlled the second half and outshot the host 6-1 and earned four corners while holding them to zero. Kyle Owen came up and fired a shot that was saved to earn WIU back-to-back corners.

Kory Soulinthavong and Michael Howell had back-to-back shots in the box that an Omaha defender blocked to maintain the lead.

Western nearly forced overtime as Arian Mehrang played a soaring ball in the box, and Howell's header bounced off the crossbar.

The Leathernecks and Mavericks retake the field on Saturday (March 6) at noon.
