Men’s Soccer Falls to Omaha

With today’s result, the team just misses out on postseason play.

OMAHA, NEB. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team was in action on Saturday (Nov. 6), falling 1-0 to the Omaha Mavericks in overtime. With the loss, Western's season is officially complete.

With a starting 11 that featured regulars like Kyle Owen, Luke Duball and Ryan DeBois, the first half was a balanced affair between both teams. Omaha led the game in shots 3-1, with the Leathernecks taking one corner kick and drawing three Maverick fouls. Two of Omaha's shots were on target and saved. The score was 0-0 at halftime entering a second period of play that continued the trends of the first.

After the game's second 45 minutes, the score was still knotted up at 0-0. Western Illinois had eight shots (three on goal) in the game's first 90 minutes, led by Cameron Territo (two shots, one on goal) and the combination of Devan DiGrado and Benedikt Zechmeister who both recorded a shot on goal. The team had three total corner kicks, drawing 11 Maverick fouls. The defense stepped up and baited Omaha's offense into three offside calls.

In overtime, it was the Leathernecks who made the first move when Arian Mehrang's shot 20 seconds in was saved by the goalkeeper. Omaha would score the winning goal soon after in the 97th minute, and the game went final as a 1-0 in favor of the Mavericks.

14 Leathernecks played in the game including Damian Rincon and Jaylen Drummond, with five players playing all 97 minutes. Western finished with nine shots (four on goal), taking three corner kicks and drawing 12 fouls. Alex Flowers made five saves on 13 shots faced.

Coming into the match Western Illinois had a chance to make the Summit League tournament, scheduled for next week, though they needed a victory to clinch. With the loss, Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer's 2021 fall campaign officially comes to a close.
