Women’s Golf Adds A Familiar Name On Signing Day

| By:

Although there is no family relation to the hall of famer Harry Mussatto, WIU added Makayla Mussatto to its 2022 roster.

Macomb, Ill.- Western Illinois women's golf added a new face to its team on signing day, welcoming Makayla Mussatto.

"Makayla Mussatto was fated to come to WIU with her last name. She is a consistent ball striker with a solid short game that will transition well to the yardages at our level," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Makayla is a hard worker, and I'm excited to see where her game goes during her time at WIU."

Mussatto joins the Leathernecks from Plainfield North High School after being one of the most famous golfers in school history. She was an all-conference golfer all four years with the Tigers, a three-time sectional golfer, and became the first state qualifier in school history. She was the team's MVP her junior and senior season and has her name on two school records. She tied Plainfield North's nine-hole record and broke the school's 18-hole record with a score of 76.

Voted as a team captain her senior season, she had one of the best seasons in Plainfield North history. Her 2021 season included three wins, six top-five finishes in her 11 tournaments, and placed 'top 10' in 10 of her 11 tournaments. She finished second overall at the conference championship and third overall at the regional championship.

Mussatto will come to Macomb with a last name that is well-known in Macomb. She shares the same last name as hall of famer Harry Mussatto. Harry served as the head golf coach at Western Illinois for 35 years, and Western Illinois named its course after him.
