Leathernecks Win Crucial Road Game

The team defeated Kansas City 1-0 on Friday.

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team was in action on Friday (Oct. 22), defeating the Kansas City Roos 1-0 at Durwood Soccer Stadium in Kansas City. With the win, Western is now 8-6-1 on the year.

Western Illinois was on the front foot in the first half, finishing the game's first 45 minutes with six shots and four fouls drawn, taking a corner kick and forcing four saves from the Kansas City 'keeper. That pressure continued into the second half, when the team's hard work finally paid off with a goal after some slick passing.

Natalie Nagle received a ball in the middle of the pitch, right at the edge of the attacking third. After a few dribbles she played a ball to Amy Andrews at the edge of the box and Andrews redirected the ball to Jenna Lundgren, who played another one-touch pass to Cassidy Grunewald in the far side of the box. Grunewald controlled the ball and played a low cross to Lundgren, who cut back onto her right foot and fired a shot to the near post, above the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Western a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. The defense would continue to hold the rest of the way, and Western Illinois were ahead when the final horn sounded.

As a team, the Leathernecks had 12 shots (nine on goal) and took three corner kicks, forcing seven saves from the Roos 'keeper. They drew nine Kansas City fouls and limited the opposition to just three shots on goal in their nine shots. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made two saves.

15 different players featured for Western including Malerie Rohweder, who played 15 minutes in what was her third appearance on the season. Seven Leathernecks played the game's full 90 minutes, and each of the starters all recorded at least 70 minutes of action. Amy Andrews led the team in shots with four (two on goal), and both Jenna Lundgren and Bridget Schuler also recorded two shots with at least one on goal.

WIU women's soccer is on the road for their next matchup, taking on Oral Roberts this Sunday (Oct. 24) at the Case Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
