Women's Soccer Unbeaten Streak Ends

After winning six and drawing one, the Leathernecks fell to South Dakota State.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team was back in action on Friday, losing 2-0 in their first Summit League match of the season to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The team had gone unbeaten in their previous seven matches, a streak which included six wins and two clean sheets.

Sporting a starting eleven that included Lauryn Peters, Amy Andrews and Angie Knies, the Leathernecks managed four shots in the game's first 15 minutes and continued to put pressure on the SDSU defense. Despite the quick start, the Jackrabbits got on the board in the 19th minute and followed it up with a penalty kick goal in the 26th.

In 90 minutes of play the teams were very close in several statistical categories with both teams taking shots and Western leading 3-2 in shots on goal. SDSU's goalkeeper made three saves, and WIU drew nine Jackrabbit fouls. 16 different players made an appearance for WIU, and seven players played the full 90. Bridget Schuler led the team with two shots on goal with Natalie Nagle, Jenna Lundgren and Amy Andrews all recording multiple shots throughout the game.

After Friday's match with the Jackrabbits, WIU women's soccer will travel to Vermillion, S.D., for a matchup with South Dakota. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
