Mike Stevenson Scholarship Established Within WIU Athletics

Anonymous donation creates scholarship to honor former coach.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Director of Athletics Danielle Surprenant has announced an endowed scholarship for the men's and women's track and field and cross country programs, named in honor of former head coach Mike Stevenson.

Thanks to a generous donation from two anonymous donors, the Mike Stevenson Scholarship will be awarded annually (effective Fall 2021) to a male or female student-athlete on the WIU Track & Field/Cross Country team.

"On behalf of Leatherneck Athletics, I'd like to thank these donors for their generosity," said Surprenant. "Scholarships like this are crucial to our success, and the fact that it's being named in honor of Mike Stevenson, who contributed so much to WIU Athletics, is extra special."

The anonymous donors decided to give back to their alma mater and establish a scholarship in honor of their former coach, Mike Stevenson. Stevenson, a track and field student-athlete at WIU, earned both his bachelor's (1987) and master's (1991) degrees from Western. He served as an assistant cross country/track and field coach at WIU from 1991 until he was named head coach in 2000. After coaching at both Purdue and the California Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2014, Stevenson returned to his alma mater as the head coach of the men's and women's cross country/track and field programs in July of 2014. Stevenson touched countless lives during his time at WIU, in addition to winning multiple championships and Coach of the Year honors.

"We had a tremendous experience at WIU, and Mike Stevenson played a large part in that," said the donor. "We are thrilled to establish this scholarship in his name, and provide scholarship support to WIU Track & Field/Cross Country student-athletes for years to come."

Endowed scholarships require a minimum gift of $25,000, which is invested by the WIU Foundation to support programs in perpetuity. Scholarship endowments can be established with a single gift of cash, securities or other property, or may be funded with a series of gifts made over time. They can also be funded through a bequest or other deferred gifts, or through a combination of lifetime and deferred gifts. For more information on scholarship endowments, contact Assistant Director of Athletics for Development Michael Jones at M-Jones2@wiu.edu or call (309) 298-1190.
