Marcheschi Homers in Debut, Leathernecks Split on Opening Day

Western Illinois softball soundly defeated Green Bay 5-2, but was outlasted 9-7 in game two to IUPUI in the Rambler Rumble.

ROSEMONT, Ill.- The Western Illinois softball team split its first two contests of the season in the Rambler Rumble Friday (Feb. 7).

"Everything was working really well in game one," head coach Holly Van Vlymen said. "I was really happy with the way they came out and attacked. We put on quite the hitting display in game two. We didn't execute some base running situations. For our young pitching, it's hard to come in a relief situation in your first game. There's no doubt in my mind that they will bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow."

Timely hitting willed the Leathernecks to victory in game one, 5-2 over Green Bay before IUPUI rallied for six runs in the sixth inning to edge Western, 9-7.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when freshman Kellie Marcheschi crushed a deep fly ball over the fence in left field for an early 1-0 lead. The hits kept coming as Tori Boysen singled and was brought home on a double to left-center by Meghan Henson. The very next batter Ashley Minyard singled through the left side of the infield to bring in Henson for a 3-0 advantage.

Green Bay answered in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run homer to center by Morgan Bihun to draw within a run.

Alyssa Ealy led off the top of the seventh and Halle Hollatz drove her in on a sacrifice fly to right field for a 4-2 edge. After Daytona Dooley entered as a pinch-runner and stole second base, Boysen sent a double down the left field line to bring in another insurance run.

The Leatherneck defense recorded back-to-back force outs to secure the first win of the season.

Abby Carlin (1-0) went the distance in the circle striking out four batters without allowing a walk. Marcheschi finished 3-for-4 at the dish as Ealy and Boysen each picked up a pair of hits.

GAME TWO

WIU struck first again in the second game against IUPUI. Ealy tripled again and came around on a Hollatz sacrifice fly to left. Ashley Minyard doubled the early margin on a frozen-rope double down the left field line. The Leathernecks utilized the sacrifice fly again to bring the tally to 3-0 as Tori Boysen brought in Kyra Kroll after a leadoff triple.

The Jaguars scratched across two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Leathernecks responded with three runs in the top half of the fifth highlighted by an RBI single up the middle from Danielle Olson for a 6-2 advantage. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Minyard singled and later scored on the throw after a Piper Foote double.

IUPUI unleashed six runs in the following half inning starting with an RBI double to left-center by Delaney Thompson. The home team on the scoreboard plated two more on a double off of Mandy Dallas' bat. Trailing 7-5, Hailey Pop singled through the right side of the infield and Maicey Bedrick doubled home the tying run.

The difference in the game was a two-run two-bagger by Jaida Speith to cap off the six-run sixth inning. IUPUI held on in the top of the seventh to pull off the comeback victory.

Savannah Rodriguez recorded a career-high eight strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work in a starting role. Maddy Anderson made her collegiate debut entering in the bottom of the fourth lasting two innings in relief, allowing four runs on five hits before handing off to Marcheschi (0-1). Marcheschi surrendered three runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Western returns to The Dome on Saturday to face Evansville at 10 a.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 12:30 p.m.
