Opponents Outlast Western on Day Two

Evansville and Miami (Ohio) used phenomenal pitching to slip past Western Illinois softball.

ROSEMONT, Ill.- The Western Illinois softball team ran into superb opposing pitching in the Rambler Rumble on Saturday (Feb. 8). Evansville took the morning contest by a 4-1 decision and Miami (Ohio) outlasted the Leathernecks 2-1 in 10 innings.

"Abby Carlin pitched so well and our two freshmen pitcher made huge adjustments from yesterday," head coach Holly Van Vlymen said. "Our defense and our pitching was a lot better today. All of our non-league games get us ready for the Summit League. We executed in situations today and our energy was really good to help us bounce back in game two."

GAME ONE

The Purple Aces struck first in the bottom of the second inning on a triple down the right field line by Hannah Hood. The very next batter, Katie McLean placed another triple to right-center for a 2-0 advantage. McLean later scored when her teammate stole second and she snuck home on the ensuing throw.

Down 3-0 in the top of the third, Western got on the board when Kellie Marcheschi reached base on an error by the Evansville shortstop allowing Alyssa Ealy to score with two outs.

In the next half inning, Evansville catcher Alyssa Barela hit a fly ball deep to left field in that struck the ceiling but was ruled a home run by the umpiring crew to extend the Purple Ace advantage to 4-1.

WIU was limited to three hits as the score of 4-1 held the rest of the way. Maddy Anderson (0-1) made her first collegiate start in the circle letting up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts over three innings. Marcheschi pitched the remaining three innings in relief in shutout fashion with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

Carlin slung four scoreless innings before Maclai Branson put Miami (Ohio) on top with a double to right-center in the top of the fifth.

Meghan Henson drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and pinch-runner Daytona Dooley stole her second base of the season to reach scoring position. The Leathernecks were down to their final out before Savannah Rodriguez singled through the left side of the infield to bring the score even at 1-1.

The RedHawks worked out of the inning to force extras. The international tiebreaker rule came into effect in the ninth inning (automatic runner placed at second base to start the inning). Ashley Minyard made a difficult diving catch and doubled the runner off at second base. WIU got runners at the corners situation with one out but were unable to bring in the game's winning run.

Miami (Ohio) pushed the go-ahead run across in the top of the 10th frame on an infield single by Morgan Lott before setting the Leathernecks down in order to seal the game.

Carlin went the distance allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts and zero walks.

Western returns to The Dome for its final game of the Rambler Rumble on Sunday (Feb. 9) against Butler at 12:30 p.m.
