The Leathernecks are off to Waco for the Getterman Classic at Baylor.

The semifinal round of the 2020 Getterman Classic will see the No. 1 and No. 4 teams face each other Saturday at 3 p.m. before the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds play at 5:30 p.m. The consolation game is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, at 10 a.m., and the championship will follow at noon. 

Live stats will be available, and all non-Baylor games will be livestreamed on FloSports.com. 

THE LAST OUTING | Western Illinois returned to the diamond with a season-opening win over Green Bay at the Rambler Rumble. 

The three-day tournament began in a 5-2 success, but the Leathernecks finished the trip 1-4, with two runs or less separating the score on two occasions – a 7-9 loss to IUPUI and a 1-2 decision to Miami (OH). 
  • Kellie Marcheschi went yard in Western's season-opener, recording the first and lone home run of the year; she is also the only Leatherneck with three hits in a single-game (3-for-4 vs. Green Bay)
  • Ashley Minyard (.308 BA) and Alyssa Ealy (.286) each tabbed four hits
  • Abby Carlin (1-1) manages a 1.59 ERA (third-best in the Summit League) after surrendering just three earned runs in 17 innings pitched

AT THE HELM AGAIN | Holly Van Vlymen was the head coach of Western Illinois softball for 11 seasons until 2017 amassing an overall record of 238-287-2. The three-time Summit League Coach of the Year returns to the dugout for the 2020 campaign while still maintaining her role as Assistant Director of Academics and Student Athlete Development at WIU.

WATCH OUT | Senior outfielder Jasmine Lara and sophomore catcher Danielle Olson were both named Summit League Players to Watch ahead of the 2020 season. Lara was a 2019 Second Team All-Summit League selection. She started and hit in the leadoff spot all 40 games collecting a team-high 40 hits and scored 31 runs.
 
Olson was a force at the plate last year in Summit League action and put together a 4-for-10 showing at the plate with eight RBI in a sweep over Omaha (May 4-5) that included her first collegiate home run. She recorded 16 of her 18 RBI in Summit League play. The Naperville, Ill., native strung together a team-high .324 batting average as a freshman with one homer and 18 RBI in 26 games (22 starts).

ROAD WARRIORS | The Purple and Gold will have to prove themselves on the road again this season, as its first 25 games are on the road. The Leathernecks do not play in Macomb until March 21 when it opens Summit League play against North Dakota. 

LOOKING AHEAD | Western makes the trek to Tennessee for the Blues City Classic (February 28 – March 1), hosted by Memphis. The field includes Northwestern State, Northern Illinois, the host, and North Alabama.
