Quick SDSU Start Plagues Leathernecks

A 16-0 run to start by South Dakota State led to a 48-89 loss on Thursday (Jan. 30) night.

MACOMB, Ill. - A quick 16-0 start by the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (16-7, 8-1) controlled the Summit hoops showdown as the Western Illinois women's basketball team (11-11, 5-4) fell 48-89 on Thursday (Jan. 30) night.

A quick start by the second place Jackrabbits led to hot three-point shooting (59 percent) that plagued the Leathernecks for only the third loss of the season inside Western Hall.

South Dakota State began the game on 16-0 run before Evan Zars stopped the outburst as she hit a left-wing three. She notched her eighth straight game with a block for her 37th of the season, which sits at eighth all-time in a season.

Elizabeth Lutz generated some offense late in the fourth quarter. The sophomore knocked down three treys to lead all scorers for the Purple and Gold for the first time in her career with 12 points, all from distance. Payton Courier also sparked some late-life with her first basket of the season, a bucket from downtown.

The Leathernecks who struggled last time out at the free-throw line found its footing back at home finishing 10-14. Olivia Kaufmann (4-4) and Danni Nichols (2-2) each finished perfect at the line, respectively.

Western Illinois regroups and has a quick turnaround with the host of North Dakota State on Saturday (Feb. 1) with a 4:30 p.m. tip.

The first part of the Saturday doubleheader will be highlighted by the 34th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).

Girls ages 12 and under are invited to register and attend the NGWSD activities in Brophy Hall to learn about a variety of sports and team building from college student-athletes. Participants are then invited to participate in the pregame high five tunnel prior, and there is no cost to attend, and participants will receive general admission tickets to the game.
