Leathernecks Stack Up Well Against SEC

Western competed against Mizzou and other regional teams to post two wins and six ‘Top 3’ finishes.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Western Illinois' track and field program showed it could hold its own against Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition Friday, with a pair of event wins and six podium finishes at the Missouri Intercollegiate.

"The team did very well, all things considered," said head coach Diane Wholey. "There were five teams that pulled out of the meet because they couldn't travel due to weather, and it was a rolling schedule, so recovery times were short.

"Mizzou put on a great event. It was a great opportunity to compete against an SEC team and other regional teams."

For the second time in as many meets, Bo Brasseur sat atop the pack in the women's long jump. She leapt at least 18 feet in three of her six attempts, and her third set the mark to beat at 18 feet, six inches (5.64 meters). Western's second event win came from Sierra Long, who was in a race all by herself as the lone finisher to clock in under a minute in the 400-meter dash. Her first-place time came in at 59.63, and Brasseur finished second in the race with a new indoor personal record of 1:00.65.

Several Leathernecks finished in the top half of their respective events and three ended the day with a new PR – Brasseur, Tia Dorshorst, and Johnny Dickson.

Dorshorst pole vaulted over 12-feet (3.66 meters) to edge her previous college best by a fourth of an inch, and though she didn't jump a spot on WIU's indoor list, her recent PR still ranks third all-time. For Dickson, his showing in the 800 meter was one of the highlights on the day for Western's men as he posted a second-place finish of 2.00.71.

Logan Lommel also faced a stiff field with 13 others in the men's mile, and in his first collegiate try, the two-sport Leatherneck placed third in 4:35.78. Lommel also suits up for Western's men's soccer team.

The Leathernecks continue their trek through Power 5 meets next Saturday at the Illini Invitational. Hosted by the University of Illinois, events at the UI Armory begin at 9 a.m.
