McIntosh Nets First, Oakland Responds Quickly

Daniel McIntosh tied the match, but two quick Oakland goals made the difference

MACOMB, Ill. – In the 2019 home opener, newcomer Daniel McIntosh scored his first career goal for the Western Illinois (0-3-0) men's soccer team, but two quick goals by Oakland (2-1-0) made the difference in a 3-1 loss on Friday (Sept. 6) evening.

"Poor clearance then a bad giveaway and a foul for the free-kick, against a quality team like Oakland is something we can't do," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "The positive thing is that we created some very good chances and could have possibly scored one or two more."

After the Golden Grizzlies scored in the 6th minute, Gimale Essacu unleashed a shot that was first saved by the Oakland goalkeeper, but the rebound found the feet of McIntosh ('32) who quickly tapped it in for a 1-1 tie.

Oakland answered the Leatherneck punch when Noah Jensen took a free-kick and bent it over the Western wall into the bottom left corner to take a 2-1 lead. The former Summit League foe stretched it to a 3-1 advantage after quick passes made their way to Cameron Wide ('46) for a goal to start the second half.

Enric Ferrer, Kyle Owen, Cesar Cosio, Paul Kirdorf and Essacu all each had a shot but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Purple and Gold travel to Chicago for a test against the UIC Flames under the lights at 7 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 8).
