Early Counter Attack Plagues WIU in The Windy City

Trilk sets a career-high in saves and helps tie single-game records.

CHICAGO – An early counter-attack plagued the Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-4-0) in a 3-0 loss to the UIC Flames (3-1-0) on Sunday (Sept. 8) night.

Tim Trilk was active between the pipes against the fourth straight Horizon League matchup. The senior set a new career-high with 13 saves en route to tying Chris Frenz (Oct. 25, 2002 vs. IUPUI) for third in saves in a game. The 13 total stops also tied a team single-game record for fourth all-time which was last set versus Drake on Sept. 17, 2000.

The Leathernecks put the pressure on UIC right out of the gates. Caleb Ragland fired a ball off a free kick that nailed the crossbar, and Daisuke Otsuka followed with a shot, but Sokratis Vasilas denied the opportunity.

Off the ensuing corner by Western, the Flames put together a counter-attack that turned into a 1-0 lead by Bar Hazut (4').

In the 36th minute, UIC again found the back of the net on a corner to push the advantage to 2-0. Midway through the second half, the Flames added an insurance goal by Hazut (73') to make it 3-0.

WIU almost cut into the Flames lead after Paul Kirdorf connected a ball to Kyle Owen who pushed it just to the left on a diving header in the 60th minute.

The Leathernecks welcome Big Ten Conference opponent Northwestern on Thursday (Sept. 12) at 4:30 p.m. for Battle of the Purple.
