Remembering Larry Garron

The Western Illinois University Athletics Hall of Famer passed away having left a rich football legacy

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.- Western Illinois University Athletics Hall of Famer and member of the undefeated 1959 Leatherneck football team Larry Garron passed away last Saturday (Sept. 14) at age 82.

The eldest of 10 brothers and sisters, Garron attended Argo High School in Argo, Ill. He excelled as a stellar student-athlete and later went to Western Illinois University, becoming the first of his family to attend college. Garron suited up for the Leatherneck Football team during the 1958 and 1959 seasons and was inducted into the WIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1974, and again in 1989 as a member of the only undefeated Western Illinois football team.
 
An original member of the Boston Patriots, Garron joined the team before its inaugural season in 1960. The running back played for the Patriots through the 1968 season and was a four-time American Football League All-Star. Garron was most recently named to the Patriots All-1960s team and currently ranks ninth in the franchise's history with 2,981 career rushing yards.  
 
He still holds the record for the longest run in Patriot history -- 85 yards, against Buffalo on Oct. 22, 1961.
 
Family and friends will honor and remember Garron's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Greater Framingham Community Church at 44 Franklin Street, Framingham, Mass., on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday morning in Greater Framingham Community Church on Friday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m.
 
In Lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Garron's name to St. Jude's or the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham Mass.
