Moynihan, Ragland Earn Career Firsts at Green Bay

Leathernecks fall 3-1 and return for the home opener Friday

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Before the first road trip of the season ended, Mitchell Moynihan and Caleb Ragland each saw a career first for the Western Illinois (0-2-0) men's soccer team in a 3-1 loss against Green Bay (1-0-1) on Sunday (Sept. 1).

"Two games in three days is difficult and Green Bay handled it better than we did," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "They were sharper on the ball and more patient causing us to chase the game most of the second half. We need to learn from this weekend and take the necessary steps to be better going forward."

Green Bay got on the board first at the 54-minute off a corner kick that found Fredi Ortega who one-timed it into the right corner. The Phoenix added two more goals (62' and 70') to make it 3-0.

At the 72-minute Moynihan and Ragland teamed up for a pair of career first in the Purple and Gold. Moynihan found the back of the net for a goal as Ragland earned an assist from his header that bounced off the crossbar.

Five minutes into the match Green Bay had back-to-back corners, but a Trilk save helped diffuse the offensive chances. The senior again was tested right away in the second half and denied the Phoenix on both shots en route to recording five saves.

Daisuke Otsuka started the WIU attack with two shots after checking in midway through the first half followed by Enric Ferrer who also fired one, but the Green Bay goalie denied him.

The Leathernecks had a late chance to get on the board in the first half off a corner that found Paul Kirdorf who shot high of the goal.

Western Illinois returns back to John Mackenzie Alumni Filed to host the home opener against Oakland on Friday (Sept. 6) with kick-off set for 4 p.m.
