Leathernecks Deal Oral Roberts its First Summit League Sweep

Western swept Oral Roberts by scores of 11-7, 8-5, and 7-3.

MACOMB, Ill. – Oral Roberts, the four-time reigning Summit League champions, has never been swept in league play. That is, until Sunday (April 7), when the Western Illinois baseball team defeated the Golden Eagles, 11-7, inside Alfred D. Boyer Stadium to crown a series that also included an 8-5 and 7-3 win for the Leathernecks.

Drue Galassi finished the set batting .600 (9-for-15) with home runs in all three games and a team-high seven RBI. The junior outfielder pushed Western ahead 2-1 on his very first at-bat – a towering shot over the right field wall – and the first inning ended with the Leathernecks up, 5-1.

The advantage remained through the final pitch, a swinging strikeout for Justin Foy, as Western recorded its first league sweep of the season.

"All weekend I've just been trusting my hands, letting the ball get deep, and it just worked for me," said Galassi. "I just stuck to my approach of hitting line drives, not even trying to hit home runs, and it just happened. It was awesome.

"We know that we're a really good team. We've just struggled a little, but we know what we have. We've seen a decent amount of the teams in conference already, and if we keep this up, we'll roll the rest of the season."

Jack Carberry (4-1) was the first to take the bump for Western and went five innings with five hits, four runs, and four strikeouts. The Golden Eagles scored three in both the third and seventh frames but were met by Foy in the eighth. He fanned four of the seven batters faced and yielded just one hit.

CJ Schaeffer Jr. joined Galassi in collecting three hits on the day, and Kevin Raisbeck added two RBI.

Western returns to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Tuesday in a rematch against Bradley at 4 p.m.
