Bradley Claims Home/Away Set vs. Leathernecks

Western's freshmen pitchers had a stellar outing, but the run support wasn't there in the 4-1 setback.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois and Bradley baseball teams met for the second time in a week's span Tuesday (April 9), and the Braves claimed both games after a 4-1 decision inside Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

It didn't take long for Chandler Fochs to find his rhythm and when he did it resulted in a career-high seven strikeouts.  The Braves scored two in the very first inning but were shut down by the freshman pitcher in the next three frames before a wild pitch increased their advantage to 3-0.

Fochs' appearance ended in five innings, and he was relieved by fellow newcomer Jordan Cheek, who added four Ks of his own.

"I just really tried to focus on throwing strikes. I've been struggling with walks, and I did again today, but when I was competing in the strike zone, I just felt unbeatable," said Fochs. "I feel like every time I get an outing, I get a little bit better. Coming in as a freshman, it's a little bit nerve-wracking, but after the first inning, I settled in and felt fine."

Heading into the fifth, the sides maintained two hits each, and Western's third drove in its run. The Leathernecks opened the seventh inning with back-to-back walks, and the runners advanced on a wild pitch before Alex Dorethy delivered on an RBI single.

Western resumes Summit League play this Friday at 3 p.m. in game one of a three-game set versus Purdue Fort Wayne.
