Leathernecks Overpower PFW in Series-Opening Win

Western recorded a season-high 17 hits with 14 runs in game one of the three-game set.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois baseball team outhit Purdue Fort Wayne 17-7 Friday (April 12) en route to a 14-4 series-opening win, where every spot in the lineup recorded at least one hit. Diego Munoz and Alex Dorethy each went 3-for-4 at the plate, combining for five RBI, while Jace Warkentien earned his second win of the season.

The 17 hits marked a season-high for the Leathernecks, and the run total was the most put up against a Division I opponent this year.

A solo home run provided the Mastodons with an early lead, but it didn't last more than a full inning as Western scored four in the third. Munoz led off the frame with a single to left field and the at-bat marked the first of three straight hits, crowned by an RBI double by Drue Galassi

The Leathernecks finished the afternoon with five extra-base hits – all doubles – and two were tabbed in the bottom of the fourth where they batted around the order to increase their advantage to 11-2 before Steve McShane ended the game in the eighth inning on a 2-RBI single.

The teams will close out the series in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. There will not be a live stream for the series finale, but game two can be viewed on ESPN3.
