Leathernecks Take Alumni Weekend vs. PFW

Western Illinois now has back-to-back Summit League series sweeps.

MACOMB, Ill. – In front of friends and former alums of the program, Western Illinois baseball claimed its second Summit League sweep, after defeating Purdue Fort Wayne by scores of 4-2 and 10-0 in a Saturday (April 13) doubleheader.

The Leathernecks recorded a season-high 17 hits in the series opener to top the Mastodons, 14-4, and the decisions moved their overall record to 14-19 and 8-7 in league play.

"Our guys deserve all the credit.  We were at a low point two weeks ago, and it has been really rewarding to watch them come together," said head coach Ryan Brownlee.  "We have had different guys step up at the plate and on the mound.  It has been a group effort.  We still have room to improve which is positive.  We have to continue our growth mindset to keep improving."

With 71 strikeouts under his belt, Javin Drake is inching his way into Western's single-season 'Top 10' list. The junior tied his career-high with 10 Ks – the third time he has done so this season -- and is currently four away from surpassing Pat Kohorst's 10th place mark (74).

Western held a 4-0 edge at the end of Drake's seven-inning appearance before a pair of bases-loaded walks put an end to its shutout.

Drake moved to 4-3 on the year in the decision, and Justin Foy received credit for the save.

The shutout that evaded the Leathernecks in game one came to pass in game two, thanks, in part, to sophomore pitcher Jack Carberry. Two was the magical number for Western as it scored two runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before four cemented the run-rule victory in the seventh.

Carberry worked six full scoreless innings to keep the 'Dons in check, allowing three hits with six strikeouts in the appearance, and when Alex Dorethy was tagged in to pitch the seventh frame, he immediately struck out the side to keep things in order.

Both run-rule wins over the 'Dons ended on the bat of Steve McShane who walked it off with a 2-RBI single in back-to-back days.

Western will take a brief pause from Summit League action to visit Southern Illinois – Edwardsville Tuesday at 6 p.m.
