Hit Fest Goes to Jackrabbits in Series Opener

Though narrowly outhit, Western fell 11-3 in the series opener.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Taking on South Dakota State, the Western Illinois baseball team began the second half of its Summit League schedule at a professional park. The change in venue allowed the Leathernecks to experience The Birdcage, the home of the Sioux Falls Canaries, and though they held an early lead, the Friday (April 19) decision went to the Jackrabbits, 11-3.

Western was narrowly outhit, 11-10, in the series opener, and hitting was contagious in the second inning. Both teams scored in the frame, where three straight at-bats by Western, including doubles from Alex Dorethy and Steve McShane, paved the way for the first run of the afternoon.

South Dakota State went on to also work three straight hits in the home-half of the inning, bringing in two on a triple to left-center field. The effort resulted in the first of five unanswered scores, and WIU errors played a part with unearned runs in the third and fifth frames.

In the top of the seventh, Kevin Raisbeck pushed things, 5-2, on an RBI single, before CJ Schaeffer Jr. did the same with two outs in the eighth. The Leathernecks finished the game with seven left on base.

The set concludes in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
