Summit League Coach of the Year Guides Western to Stellar Championship Performance

Greg Naumann was voted the Men’s Head Coach of the Year as WIU crowned championships with 22 all-time marks and four school records.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Greg Naumann is a Western Illinois alum, former Leatherneck student-athlete and the 2019 Summit League Men's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year. He guided the Leathernecks to four school records, four bronze medals, and 22 all-time marks by the conclusion of the league championships Saturday (Feb. 23), which were presented by U.S. Air Force Special Operations.

"This was an awesome conference championship," said Naumann. "We had so many different individuals stepping up and racing incredibly fast.  The championship already got faster, and they were willing and able to keep up.  We had numerous records broken throughout the meet, and changes to our top 10 list that it makes me so excited for the future of Leathernecks' Swimming and Diving.

"Men's Coach of the Year was unexpected," the first-time recipient continued. "There are so many deserving coaches in the Summit League that I am truly honored to be recognized by them. The team is the only reason why something like that would happen.  They challenge me to be a better coach to help make them better."

Claiming back-to-back bronze medals in the 100-meter individual medley, Erica Hagen and Chance McQuigg touched the wall in 58.72 and 51.64 in their respective heats while Brennan Bladel received his medal with a third-place time in the 200-yard backstroke. The junior from Davenport, Iowa, set a school record in his preliminary race (1:50.34) and freshman Adam Peterson added his second in as many days when he tied for fourth in the 100-freestyle.

Peterson wrapped the championship meet with school records in the 50-yard (20.38) and 100-yard freestyles (44.98).

For 10 Leathernecks, the week marked their final outing in Purple & Gold.

Thank you, seniors - Amanda Schaefer, Erica Hagen, Dana Kaftan, Samir Almhiemid, Drake Stierman, Seth Brady, Colin Parker, Chance McQuigg, Phillip Kudela, and Marissa Purdum.
