SEMO, WIU Even Series after Saturday Decision

Western took game one 9-2 before dropping game two, 14-2.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Western Illinois baseball seeks a series win at Southeast Missouri Sunday after the Redhawks evened things at 1-1 with a 14-2 decision Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon.

Two swings of the bat in the second inning turned into a 3-2 lead for SEMO as both sides homered to score the first runs of the game. Alex Dorethy went yard for the first time this season with a 2-RBI shot to center field, but the advantage became a deficit when SEMO scored three on a shot to right in the home half of the inning.

The Redhawks used back-to-back five-run innings in the fourth and fifth to separate for good, while limiting Western to a pair of hits between the second and seventh frames. Nolan Ard broke up the stretch with a two-out single in the eighth but was left stranded at the base.

"We got off to a great start and had a chance to extend our lead from 2-0 to 4-0.  When you get offensive chances, you need to capitalize," said head coach Ryan Brownlee.  "SEMO is a good offensive club and you can't give them extra-base runners.  We made it way too easy for them to score. This is a good learning experience for our team.  The great thing about baseball is you get a quick turnaround and get to do it all over again.  We have another opportunity to keep moving forward and improving tomorrow."

The rubber match between Western and Southeast Missouri is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
