Galassi Homers Twice in Leathernecks First Win of 2019

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.Drue Galassi sent a pair of rockets over the outfield wall of Capaha Field to guide the Western Illinois baseball team to its first win of the season in a 9-2 decision over Southeast Missouri Friday (Feb. 22).

The afternoon included a season-best 10 hits and nine runs for Western, and Javin Drake (1-1) was credited with the win.

"That was all our guys. They had a great week of prep for the weekend.  They focused on getting better with 2Ks and having a better approach in their counts," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "Both go hand in hand with a great offensive approach.  Top to bottom, they were more relaxed.  Javin and Jace [Warkentien] again gave us a consistent effort and a chance to win.  Our defense will continue to improve with more consistent reps.  We just need to rinse and repeat for tomorrow."

Western jumped on SEMO's starting pitcher for a 5-1 edge, leading to a call to the bullpen in the fifth inning. Runs were scored on wild pitches and a sacrifice fly, but no play dazzled as much as Galassi's leadoff home run.

Hitting out of the 9-spot, the junior drove his first pitch to center field for an inside-the-park homer in the fifth frame. Galassi recorded two bombs all last season, and finished Friday's series-opener with a pair after a 3-run shot down the right-field line extended WIU's lead to 8-1 in the sixth.

The Leathernecks received another strong start from Drake, who pitched five innings, allowing just one run on five hits with a season-high seven strikeouts.

Earning a save, Jace Warkentien came on in relief to yield three hits and one run while waving two. He faced a challenging third inning when the Redhawks loaded the bases with no outs, but kept his composure to close the frame with a double play and ground out.

Western continues its series at Capaha Field Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be aired live on the radio at SEMO ESPN 1220AM.
