Leathernecks Fight Back in Close Loss at WKU

| By:

Sydney Hollings went 3-for-4 at the plate while Aly Compton drove in three runs

Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The Western Illinois (4-4) softball team erased a five-run deficit but fell short, 7-6 in another back-and-forth game at Western Kentucky (6-2) on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17). First pitch was pushed back one hour due to rain and field conditions.

Western Kentucky jumped ahead with a five-spot in the bottom of the second inning. Kennedy Sullivan doubled home her Hilltopper teammate at first to get on the board. After two runs came in for a 3-0 score, two more WKU runs came in on double to left by Shannon Plese.

Trailing 5-0, the Leathernecks had their work cut out for them in the top of the third. Danielle Olson singled and Sydney Hollings doubled to right center to put two runners in scoring position. Payton Abbott brought across the first Leatherneck run of the day on an RBI groundout back to the pitcher followed by an Aly Compton single up the middle to plate Hollings. Madison Boone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the deficit shrunk to 5-3.

In the top of the fourth with Olson and Abbott in scoring position, Compton delivered another single to center to knot the game up at five runs apiece. The lead was short lived though, Plese came through with a two-out single in the bottom half of the fourth to score the runner from second and regain the Hilltopper lead, 6-5.

Now down 7-5, Western Illinois got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. Hollings finished 3-for-4 at the plate and doubled down the right field line to lead off the frame. Hailey Duwa and Abbott both walked to load the bases while a wild pitch brought Hollings home, but that ended up being the last run of the game.

Ashley Minyard tried to get a rally started in the top of the seventh with a single and by picking up a stolen base. However, she was left on base as Western Kentucky sealed the series victory.

Savannah Rodriguez took a no-decision lasting 1.2 innings allowing five runs, but only one was earned. The freshman struck out two batters and walked three. Abbott (1-1) moved to the circle for 4.1 innings surrendering one earned run on four hits with one walk and a strikeout.

The Leathernecks start a three-game series at UT Martin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23 beginning at 12 p.m.
