Baxter, Fitzpatrick Earn MVFC’s Highest Academic Award

Riggs Baxter and Justin Fitzpatrick were named recipients of the President’s Council Academic Excellence Award.

ST. LOUIS – Riggs Baxter and Justin Fitzpatrick were awarded the Missouri Valley Football Conference's highest academic achievement Thursday (Feb. 14) as recipients of the President's Council Academic Excellence Award. 

The two will graduate this May with degrees in engineering technology and sports broadcasting, respectively, and join 32 other student-athletes from around the league as president's council awardees. The MVFC also announced its Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and Honor Roll where a total of 48 Leathernecks were honored. 

The President's Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average (through Fall 2018 semester) and participation in athletics a minimum of two years. The student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation. The league's Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum GPA of 3.2 for the previous two semesters (freshmen are not eligible). And to qualify for the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.0-grade point average for a specified term (Fall 2018), must have been a member of the football team, and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment during the fall.

2018 Second Team All-MVFC … 2017 All-Academic Second Team … 2017 Second Team All-MVFC … team captain … two-year starter … tied for eighth in the Valley in passes defended … tied for team lead with nine pass breakups and added two interceptions  … career-best 11 tackles vs. UNI this season (9 solo/2 assist)
